Tommy Steele, sixties pop star and star of the movie 'Half a sixpence'
turned sculptor and produced this fine work of art which he apparently 'sold'
to the city for the princely sum of,you guessed it,half a sixpence!
This bronze is actually called 'all the lonely people', a line taken from
the famous Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby
This is one of many tributes to The Beatles found across the city of Liverpool, England
If you're not familiar with the song, it goes like this:
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?
Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. darning his socks in the night when there's nobody
there
What does he care?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Located in Stanley street close to the Cavern quarter, Eleanor Rigby was
unveiled in 1982, by the sculptor himself
It is said that inside the statue Tommy placed a four leaf clover for luck,
a page from the Bible for spiritual help, a sonnet for lovers, an adventure
book for excitement, and a pair of football boots for action
Take a few minutes out of your busy visit to the city, and enjoy a few
moments reflection in the company of the enigmatic Eleanor Rigby
