The amazing thing about a visit to this Cathedral, for
many people, is the last visit you make is as breath taking as the first, and most just can’t seem to get over the magnificence of this building
One of the reasons for this is probably the fact that Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, England, is the largest Anglican Cathedral in the world
It took most of the twentieth century to build (we had builders like that doing a job for us once lol!) no seriously, the foundation stone was laid by Edward VII in 1904 and his great grand daughter Elizabeth II officially opened the building in 1978 (it still wasn’t finished then)
The story behind this building is quite fascinating too
It was actually designed by a gentleman by the name of Giles Gilger Scott, who had won an architectural competition to design an Anglican Cathedral for Liverpool
The authorities must have had a shock when they found the person they had given this task to was actually only twenty three years of age!
So, to assist him with the work, it was agreed a more senior person would be drafted in the form of one of the United Kingdom’s most learned masters of architecture, George Frederick Bodley
However, from Bodley’s death in 1907 until his own death in 1960, Scott worked on the Cathedral alone, and what you see today are the fruits of all those years labour
Mind you, Scott would have been pleased with the outcome of all his work. Not least the way the Cathedral is visited and utilised by the people of Liverpool and visitors alike
Also, because the Cathedral is well utilised for many purposes, this means that there is nearly always something going on!
So, all well as worship, there are concerts, shows and exhibitions, there is a fabulous visitor centre which sells cards, books , souvenirs and they also have a very large selection of Christian music CD’s, and in the Refectory you can rest your legs and have a nice cup of tea and a sandwich
There are secure parking facilities available for visitors to the Cathedral at a small charge, and there is lots of ‘pay and display’ parking available in the vicinity, just in case you want to take a stroll in to the city centre whilst you’re here
Admission to the Cathedral is free, although voluntary donations are invited and around £3 per person seems to be the going rate
There is an admission charge to The Tower (the best vantage point to view the whole of Merseyside) and Embroidery Exhibition (a unique collection of Victorian and Edwardian embroidery) currently £2
