During your visit to the city of Liverpool, England, head south from the Albert Dock and keep on
the coast road until you see this fine building
You can't really miss it because, as you can see, it is very distinctive
with it's red brick and impressive tower
This is Cains Brewery, and the reason we have included this as part of the
virtual tour is the fact that Cains is the official beer of the Liverpool Capital of
Culture 08 celebrations and, as part of the celebrations, Cains Brewery is
now open to visitors
Cains are the oldest brewers in Liverpool, and have been supplying fine ales
since 1850
This building was constructed to help fulfil the growing demand for Cains
beers and was built back in 1887
The name 'Cains' comes from the brewery's founder, Robert Cain, who also
commissioned the famous Liverpool public house, The Philharmonic on Hope
Street, famous for it's ornate marble gentleman's lavatories which are
arguably the poshest lavatories in a public house in the
country!
These are a
visitor attraction in themselves ( guys - look out for the girls - they
often try to take a peek!)
Today, Cains is still privately owned, by the Dusanj brothers, who have
opened the doors of the brewery to visitors and offer guided tours
These include two complimentary pints of Cains and a free buffet
Tickets
for these tours must be booked in advance and, please note, the tours are
not really suitable for the less agile, as there are quite a large number of
steps to climb
At the time of writing this the entry fee is £3.50 - and we don't think you
can go wrong with that!
