Merseyside is a place steeped with myth and legend, and one such place is
the charming village of Hale, which claims to have once been home to a real
life giant
On arrival at Hale village you can't help but be struck at how quaint this
little place is, there are lots of beautiful white painted thatched cottages
which would all be contenders for a best kept garden competition, the
village green with a war memorial and Union Flag flying, the village post
office, and across the road a pub called The Childe of Hale
The pub is always a good starting point, and here you can start your search
for the local giant, known as the Childe of Hale ( the pub has been named
after the village's most famous son)
So, who was this man, did he really exist, and was he really a giant?
The history books are a little sketchy, but the Child of Hale was born
sometime in the 1570's and lived until the 1620's, and his real name was
John Middleton
There is a cottage in Hale, where legend tells us he lived, bearing the
plaque 'John Middleton lived here 1578 -1623', whether that was his whole
life or not, we'll probably never know
A stroll over to the village church, St Mary's, confirms the existence of
John Middleton as his grave is here in the grounds, and is overlooked by
the memorial pictured here, which has been carved out of a tree
But why the celebrity status? Was he really a giant?
Well, you can certainly say he was a big fellow
On his gravestone reads the inscription:
"Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet
three."
As always, we're not going to give you the whole story here, you'll probably
want to explore this for yourself as part of your visit, but rest assured,
this story is not myth or legend, the Childe of Hale really was a real life
giant!
(little ones will love a day out looking for the giant too!)
While you're in Hale, you may like to take a stroll, or a short drive, up to
the Hale lighthouse; we actually enjoy a cycle ride round this area, as it's
fairly flat on the roads, and good fun if you go off road on to the coastal
path
At low tide you can go down to the beach and maybe do a spot of fishing;if
you're a fan of nature, this area is also very popular with bird watchers,
so bring your binoculars
