If you enjoy visiting places of worship during your vacations, then Liverpool has just about something for everyone, including not one but two cathedrals!
One of our favourites has to be the oldest church in Liverpool, All Saints Parish Church, which is located in a leafy south Liverpool suburb, a charming place called Childwall
The reason we like this church so much, is it’s tranquil surroundings,
even though Childwall is actually quite a busy place, and quite well known across the city for it’s busy ‘Childwall Fiveways’, a fast moving traffic island with five exits!
The church is only one minute from here, but you’d never imagine it
The All Saints Parish Church is one of the many Grade I listed buildings around the city, and was actually first recorded in the Domesday Book
of 1086, it reads:
“ Four Radmans held Childwall as four Manors. There is half a hide. It was worth eight shillings. There was a priest, having half a carucate of land in frank almoign."
The building has, of course, gone through much regeneration over the years, but it has retained it’s character, and congregation unusually
Childwall has a long history, and was actually first known as ‘Cileuuelle’, which is Old English for ‘a stream where youngsters meet'
Across the road from the church you will see the Childwall Abbey
‘The Abbey’ as it‘s known locally, is a pub, restaurant and hotel, and has great views of the Childwall Valley, as well as the church of course
It would be romantic to think that the Abbey was built around the same time as the church, as a home for the monks maybe. It is, in fact, a Victorian building, and would provide a great location for a stay in Liverpool
