When the Borough of Liverpool, England, was first created by King John back in 1207, it was actually established as a naval port from which to attack the Irish
To protect the port from any possible attack, the King ordered a new castle be built, and it was here in what is now Derby Square, where the Liverpool Castle once stood
After a period of decline, the last remains of the castle were demolished in 1726 to make way for the building of St George’s church. The church stood here for just over 100 years until it was demolished in 1898
Unfortunately, today there are no signs of either a castle or a church ever having stood here, but you will find this splendid monument to Queen Victoria
But even this we are quite lucky to see, as this area of the city was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Liverpool Blitz, and every surrounding building was destroyed, leaving only Queen Victoria standing!
Created in bronze by sculptor Charles John Allen, Queen Victoria was unveiled in 1906 by Her Royal Highness Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyle, the Queen Victoria is a popular meeting place and a good location to sit and eat your sandwiches as you watch the busy world go by in Liverpool city centre
Directly across the road from the monument is Castle Street, the oldest street in Liverpool, and at the top of Castle Street you will see the city’s finest Georgian building, Liverpool Town Hall
