In my Liverpool Home,
We speak with an accent exceedingly rare,
Meet under a statue exceedingly bare,
And if you want a Cathedral, we've got one to spare
In my Liverpool Home
This is the chorus of a well known traditional folk song which has been sung by generations of Scousers (natives of Liverpool, England) over the years, as well as visitors to the city
The statue mentioned in the song is the fondly named ‘Dickie Lewis’, so named for obvious reasons as you’ll see from the picture above
This bronze, created by American sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein 1880 - 1959, stands above the Lewis’s Department Store on Ranlegh Street in Liverpool city centre, and it’s official title is ‘Liverpool Resurgent’
From New York, Sir Jacob was renowned for his modern sculpture and controversial works of art
Dickie was first revealed in 1956 by Lord Woolton, and the bronze represents the rebirth of Liverpool after the Second World War
Many a courting couple have arranged 'to meet at Dickie Lewis ' hence this line of the song
If any of your party are so taken aback with this that they need a stiff drink – head for the nearby Dickie Lewis Pub on Mount Pleasant
The accent exceedingly rare goes without saying, it's Scouse and sounds something like this:
"Dey don't do dat down der doe do dey doe?"
Translated means
"They don't do that down there though, do they though?"
We would like to graciously thank Dave Wood, a professional Liverpool photographer for allowing us to use his ‘Dickie Lewis’ picture for this article – you can’t imagine how difficult it is to get a picture as good as this – and we still can’t quite figure out how Dave got it!
Anyway, well done Dave, and thanks!
