Tour In Style

Liverpool Empire Theatre

The Empire is the largest of Liverpool's theatres

( Liverpool actually has a number of theatres including The Playhouse, The Everyman, and of course, this fine establishment) and is, in fact the the largest two tier theatre in the United Kingdom (if you go in the higher tier, make sure you've a good head for heights as it is REALLY high)

Theatre going on Lime Street is a long tradition, and the original theatre which stood here actually first opened it's doors way back in 1866. This was the Prince of Wales and Italian Opera House, and was later re-named the Royal Alexandra Theatre and Opera House

Architects W. and T. R. Milburn got to work on the design of the new theatre, and the Empire opened to the public in 1925. One could imagine the architects being greeted with as much applause as the artistes on the opening, as the interior of the Empire is absolutely awesome

The Empire has played host to some of the biggest shows and in recent years has seen performances of Grease, Blood Brothers, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Saturday Night Fever, Buddy and, a couple of years ago, the theatre actually closed for six weeks to allow the installation of special effects equipment for Disney's Beauty and the Beast

(A little tip, check what's on prior to your visit and get your tickets booked in advance, as visitors come to the Empire from all over the North West of England and beyond, and many shows are sold out well in advance)

If you fancy a drink, visit the Empire's lounge bar which offers wonderful views across to St George's Hall and William Brown Street. You are also close to the vibrant city centre with a multitude of choice of eating and drinking establishments, and a great way to finish off your evening
