If you're a fan of soccer, no visit to the city of Liverpool, England, would be complete without visiting our famous football clubs (yes, we have two)
These are Liverpool Football Club, located in the outer suburb of Anfield,
and Everton Football Club, a short drive away at Goodison
Pictured here is the famous 'Kop' which is the Liverpool Football Club's
supporters' stand at Anfield
If on your visit to Liverpool you have the opportunity to 'go the match',
you'll be guaranteed a footballing treat
On arrival at the 'Kop end' of Anfield you will be greeted by the Bill
Shankly Bronze
Whether or not you're not able to 'go the match', a visit to the Liverpool
Museum and Stadium Tour is highly recommended
The Museum tells the story of England's most successful football club, and
as well as looking at the history of the club, it also looks at all things
LFC present day and future
The Stadium Tour takes you on a visit to the dressing room, where you can
sit next to the players' football strips, you can walk down the tunnel and
touch the famous 'This is Anfield' sign (if you can reach!) and take a
stroll to the world famous 'Kop' stand
The four European cups are on permanent display, so bring your camera! (on
odd occasions the cups may not be on the premises such as when they are
taken to shows or charity events - so check first if you feel this may
spoil your visit)
There are no stadium tours on match days
Please note that the home of Liverpool Football Club is destined to change
soon - watch this space - but certainly check before making a special
journey - we''d hate for you to be looking for it when it's no longer there!
During your visit to Liverpool Football Club you may also like to take a
stroll round to see the Bill Shankly Gates and bronze
So, who was Bill Shankly O.B.E?
Bill Shankly was the manager of Liverpool between 1959 and 1974 and was, and
still is, one of, if not THE most well respected managers British football
has ever seen
Born in East Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1913, Shankly made a name for himself
first as a player with Patrick Thistle, Carlisle United and Preston North
End
He became manager of Liverpool Football Club in 1959 and took them from
strength to strength -
1962 Second Division champions
1964 First Division champions
1965 FA Cup Winners, European Champions' Cup semi-finalists
1966 First Division champions, European Cup Winners Cup beaten finalists
1969 First Division runners-up
1971 FA Cup beaten finalists, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-finalists
1973 First Division champions, UEFA Cup winners
1974 FA Cup winners, First division runners-up
On his retirement in 1974, Shankly was awarded the OBE, and in 1997, this
tribute was unveiled in front of The Kop at Anfield

This fine work of art was created by Liverpool artist and sculptor Tom
Murphy, who has numerous other credits to his name around the city, none
least the John Lennon Bronze at Liverpool John Lennon Airport
This statue stands at over 8 feet tall and shows Shankly in a familiar pose,
taking applause from adoring fans and wearing a fan's scarf around his neck
Shankly was also very famous for his quotes, one of his most well known is
the following, often mis-quoted quote, which he said during a Granada TV
interview in 1981, shortly before his death:
"Someone said 'football is more important than life and death to you' and I
said 'Listen, it's more important than that"
Pictured here are the Shankly Gates at Liverpool Football Club and the
Hillsborough Memorial

Above the Shankly Gates appears the slogan "You'll Never Walk Alone", which
is the anthem sung by Liverpool supporters around the world
If you're not familiar with this anthem, it goes like this:
(Rogers and Hammerstein)
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver
Song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams
Be tossed and blown.
Walk on
walk on
With hope in your hearts!
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
(You may recognise these lyrics from the movie Carousel. Judy Garland
recorded it too)
Next to the Shankly Gates is the Hillsborough Memorial dedicated to the 96
men, women and children who controversially lost their lives at a fateful FA
Cup semi final at Hillsborough on 15th April 1989
