If the children groan at the mention of going to visit a museum it’s hardly surprising is it?
I mean, considering many of these are draughty and dusty establishments displaying clay pots and coins, for many of today’s children visiting a museum is boooor – ing!
Well, on your visit to Liverpool, England, take them to the Liverpool Museum and it’ll be a different story
Here, you will find five floors with just about something for everyone!
Okay, they do have clay pots and coins for those who enjoy looking at them, but there are also sections on: Natural History, Space, ‘Earth Before Man’, A.B.C of Minerals, European Works of Art, Botany, there is an Aquarium and a whole lot more
The really great thing about the Liverpool Museum we think, is the fact that many of the sections are interactive, so children and adults alike can actually get involved with the whole thing, as opposed to just peering through glass displays
Our personal favourite part of the museum is the Transport Gallery (probably because we're in the transport business!), as on display here are horse drawn and steam powered vehicles from the 19th and early 20th century, and there’s also an electric motor coach built in 1892 and salvaged from the Liverpool Overhead Railway
Our number one favourite display has got to be this though: The Liverpool and Manchester Railway Locomotive – Lion
This was built in 1838 by Todd, Kitson and Laird and was restored to full working order in 1979 – a gem!
The Liverpool Museum is located on William Brown Street, Liverpool, and this will be one of the first sights you’ll see if you’re coming in to our wonderful city by train
It is located next to the impressive George’s Hall on Lime Street
The Liverpool Museum was founded in 1851 through the bequest of the 13th Earl of Derby who had left the city his collections of stuffed animals (if you like that knid of thing - but look out for the rattlesnake - just too life – like for most!)
Anyway, later in 1867, a Liverpool goldsmith by the name of Joseph Mayer, donated a marvellous collection of antiquities, and with these two collections the Liverpool Museum as one of the finest in the United Kingdom
If you wish to take interior photographs of the Liverpool Museum, you are asked to gain permission from the Information Centre
If you’re feeling peckish, there is a restaurant here too, but if you want a larger choice though, bear in mind you are just a few minutes walk from Liverpool city centre where there are a whole host of pubs, cafes and restaurants
So, on your visit to Liverpool, why not try to keep a few hours aside to visit the wonderful Liverpool Museum, you’ll be glad you did!
Whilst you’re in this area of the city you may also like to visit:
The Three Graces
Cavern Walks
The Beatles Shop
The Grapes Pub
John Lennon statue
