Monuments and Memorials

Okay, these are not exactly monuments, but they make a great picture don’t they?

They may not be monuments but these red telephone boxes stand as part of British history, and unfortunately are lesser spotted these days. These two fine examples can be found in Exchange Street West, next to the

Town Hall

Take a walk round Liverpool’s famous Albert Dock, and you will find the HMS Conway Anchor. Built in 1839, HMS Conway was a 92 gun wooden battleship. The anchor was donated to the Maritime Museum and it was placed outside the main entrance to welcome visitors from around the world

Pay a visit to Liverpool’s China Town, and on entrance you will be welcomed by these friendly looking fellas - don't worry, they don't bite, but they HAVE heard every mother in law joke in the book!

Round the corner from here is the ruin of St Luke’s church ,or the ‘Bombed Out Church’ as it is known by the locals. It stands on the corner of Leece Street and Berry Street, and dominates the top of Bold Street

The church was built in 1831, but was damaged during the Second World War, but now stands as a memorial to peace and a place of tranquillity

Take a stroll across town down to the Pier Head, and you’ll find this monument to Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, one of Liverpool’s most prominent ship owners and businessmen and founder of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

A few steps along and you’ll meet Edward VII, below

A popular meeting place for people, and pigeons, is this most intriguing landmark in Liverpool city centre, The Great Escape, pictured above

Obviously nothing to do with Steve McQueen and flying motor bikes, this creation is the work of artist Edward Cronshaw and weighs in at over three tons!

A short walk up Church Street and you’ll find these two fine gentlemen, Sir John Moores 1862 – 1993 and Mr Cecil Moores 1902 – 1989 – the empty whiskey bottle was not, of course, part of the original art work

Please note that this statue has been removed as part of the Big Dig

Captain FJ Walker - Battle of The Atlantic war convoys memorial. You’ll find the Captain at the Liverpool Pier Head in front of the Three Graces, looking out over the River Mersey

Heroes of the Marine Engine Room (of the Titanic) – also in the background of this picture you’ll notice cranes at work as part of the Liverpool ‘Big Dig’ – we’re getting ready for you folks!

At the bottom of Castle Street (or the top depending which way you’re coming from) you’ll find The Queen Victoria Monument
