The old airport building in Speke, Liverpool, England, is now home to the Marriott Hotel
Now, whether you’re staying at the Marriot or not, it’s worth calling by for a look, first to see the historic art deco style building from the 1930’s, and, especially if you like aircraft, to see this DH89 Dragon Rapide which is on display in front of the hotel

The actual airport was opened on 1st July 1933, the central control tower and number one hangar were completed in 1937, and the new terminal building completed in 1939
During WWII the airport was requisitioned by the government, and it’s main role was the assembly and testing of war planes imported from the
US
In 1961 the airport was handed back to Liverpool Corporation
In 1968 a new runway was built by Speke Hall, which is a short distance from here, enabling regular jet services to begin
In 1986 airport operations were transferred to the new Liverpool Airport, later to be named Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and the original airport buildings fell in to disuse
A joint venture partnership between Neptune Developments Limited and Whitbread Hotel Company, aided by Speke Garston Development Company and with European funding enabled the derelict building to be transformed in to this four star luxury hotel
Across the road from the old airport building is a new retail park, so if some of your party may prefer a spot of shopping rather than taking a look at the Dragon, they can pop over and to the shops
