If you enjoy a leisurely walk in the park, then you’ve come to the right place!
Liverpool, England, boasts over 2500 acres of public parks and gardens, thanks to the clever foresight of the people in charge during the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century
The Peter Pan bronze in Liverpool’s 387 acre Sefton Park, has been revamped to it’s original pristine condition, after years of vandalism, at the cost of £40,000
Thank goodness he has now found a new, more secure, home in the Park, within the grounds of the Sefton Palm House
The Peter Pan bronze was first unveiled in front of a crowd thousands back in 1928
He was commissioned by a gentleman by the name of George Audley, who was a wealthy bachelor businessman from Southport, a seaside town not far north of Liverpool
Mr Audley donated the statue as a gift to the children of the city
Based on J M Barrie’s character, ‘the child who never grew up’, it is an exact replica of the Sir George Frampton original which stands in Kensington Gardens, London
Sir George, born in London in 1860, produced many fine pieces of art including The Lady of the Lake, Mother and Child, and Mysteriarch, which is also on display in Liverpool, at the Walker Art Gallery
Unfortunately, over the years, some have decided they want to take a little piece of Peter Pan home with them, and parts of his anatomy have been forcibly removed, along with his pipes and some of the creatures adorning this great piece of art work
Hence the revamp in time for the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 08, so visitors to the city can see Peter Pan in all his glory, so to speak
The Peter Pan bronze has always been a popular feature of Sefton Park, with children of all ages keen to seek him out
So popular, in fact, that since the unveiling of the original Peter Pan in London, replicas have been appearing around the world
Is there one near you?
There is a Peter Pan bronze in America, in the grounds of Rutgers University
You will also find two in Canada, one in St John’s Newfoundland and one in Glenn Gould Park, Newfoundland
There are also copies in Belgium and in Queen’s Gardens, Australia
Anyway, our Peter Pan is now back fighting fit, so if you’re visiting Sefton Park as part of your visit to Liverpool, why not call by and say hello?
