Picton

Picton Clock is located at the junction between Childwall Road, Church Road North, and Wavertree High Street here in Liverpool, England

The Picton Clock was erected in 1884, and was, like many of these things back then, a memorial to a wealthy local’s wife

The wealthy local in question was Sir James Allanson Picton

His late wife, of fifty years, was Sarah

Sir James was a local architect and surveyor and councillor, and lived in nearby Mill Lane

He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1881 for his ‘high attainments and public services’

Now if you’re going to get up close to the clock, it’s well worth it, both to take photographs and to read the 100+ year old inscriptions. Take care though as the clock is in the middle of a very busy roundabout and the traffic moves fast!

Apparently Sir James deliberately chose this busy location for the

memorial (although in 1884 there would’ve been horses and carts not

cars of course!) so that it would be seen by as many people as possible,

as this was the very centre of the old village – it’s free to look at too!

Across the road from the Picton Clock is the Picton Round House, another of Liverpool’s many listed buildings

Although it is known as ‘The Round House’, it is, in fact, octagonal

It was built in 1796 as an overnight lock up for drunks, waifs and strays!

However, the lock up function of the Round House became defunct in 1845, as the first village police station had opened

It was occasionally employed after this to isolate victims of disease and to provide a roof for the night for the destitute

The Round House is located on the green in Lakeside Road, close to the Picton Clock, in Wavertree

Incidentally, Wavertree High Street comes to life especially at night, as there are many great pubs in the locality – well worth a visit
