The restoration of the Sefton Palm House, located in the heart of Sefton Park, here in the city of Liverpool, commenced in February 2000 after a campaign was launched to rescue this fine piece of Victorian history from the demolition men
After serious bomb damage during the last war, and as a consequence of harsh weather conditions on the glazing putty, the Palm House slipped in to a state of deterioration
The Palm House was eventually closed to the public for safety reasons in the 1980's
Not surprsingly, local residents organised a campaign to restore the Palm House which resulted in the launch of the 'Sponsor a Pane Appeal' which raised £35,000, funding the partial restoration, and in 1993 it was re-opened to the public
Additional funding was later granted from the Heritage Lottery Fund to the tune of £2.5 million
The demolition men were staved off, and the builders brought in, and the full restoration work commenced in 2000
The Palm House was officially re-opened on 6th September 2001, in plenty of time for the Liverpool Capital of Culture celebrations in 08
