Sefton Palm House

Are you a lover of the great outdoors?

If so, during your visit to Liverpool, England, you must take a trip down to Sefton Park, and whilst you're there, go and take a look at the wonderful Sefton Park Palm House, pictured here

The Palm House has recently been fully restored, after a rather chequered
history we're afraid

It was a gift to the city from Henry James Thompson and was designed by
Edinburgh architects Mackenzie and Moncur

The doors were first opened back in 1896, and was enjoyed by many thousands of visitors to the park

However, at the outbreak of the Second World War, it was decided by the powers that be that the whole thing would need to be camouflaged, as the glass in the dome roof could have reflected light and acted as a guide for invading bombers

So, a massive paint job was instigated and the entire building was covered in a matt paint finish, painted green with grey 'paths' to blend in with the rest of the park

Unfortunately, the Palm House was blown to smithereens in 1941 when an incendiary bomb was dropped nearby

After the war, the Palm House was repainted and reglazed and brought back to it's former glory, apparently at a cost of £6,163, no mean sum in 1950

Over the years, however, the Palm House fell in to decline, and was eventually closed in 1980 due to safety reasons

£2.5 million was raised from various British and European Funding to restore the Palm House, and it reopened in 2001

Designed in the tradition of Paxton's glass houses, the Palm House boasts a magnificent collection of exotic plants, and is a real treat whether you're a seasoned botanist, or you just enjoy sitting in the tranquillity of these kind of surroundings (on our last visit we could hear the music of water flowing and the songs of wrens who have found a home in the dome of the Palm House - magical!)

By the way, also in the grounds of the Palm House you'll also find the Peter Pan Bronze
