Whilst you're out and about around Liverpool, England, you can't help but be awestruck
by some of the wonderful architecture the city has to offer
One of our favourite buildings has always been the Liverpool Victoria
Building at the top of Brownlow Hill
Designed by Liverpool architect Alfred Woodhouse (1830-1905), who also
designed the Natural History Museum in London, amongst others, the Victoria
Building was first opened in 1892
Originally the building belonged to the Liverpool Victoria University
When the independent Liverpool University was formed in 1903, the Victoria
Building became the administration section, providing offices for the senior
academics, and also housing the University Library
The distinctive red brick building with it's marvellous clock tower is
another of the many listed buildings of Liverpool, and is listed as a Grade
II
It's a true work of art, but currently you can only see this from the
outside as, sadly, and you won't believe this (we couldn't anyway) the
building has been mainly unused for many years, although plans are being discussed currenly to start utilising it again
As part of the Liverpool Capital of Culture 08 celebrations, there has been a £7.5 million investment made to transform the Victoria Buildings in to a new art gallery and museum. It is due to open to the public in June 08
Anyway, it's still well worth taking a look even from the exterior
Finding it is fairly easy as it is just a two minute walk from the
Metropolitan Cathedral, and is on one of the main roads in to the city
centre
Across the road there is a nice area to sit and watch the world go by whilst
you have your sandwiches, although if you go at lunchtime you may have to
squeeze yourself on a bench in between the students!
Whilst you're in this area of the city you may also like to visit:
The Metropolitan Cathedral
The Anglican Cathedral
The Williamson Tunnel Heritage Centre
